According to Nokian Heavy Tyres Marketing Manager Jukka Hautala, forest machinery has grown in size and efficiency, which means that they can bring larger loads out of the woods at a time.
"It is an environmentally positive trend. There is less damage to the forest floor from to-and-fro driving, fuel consumption decreases and harvesting costs per unit are lower", Hautala lists the advantages of large machines.
While loads are heavier, the machinery should not cause any more damage to the forest than before. This is why tyres bear special responisibility for the environment.
"Tyre width has been increased up to 800 mm. Wide tyres distribute the pressure evenly, which reduces the pressure per square inch. Tyre pressure and pattern also have a significant effect on the tracks the machines leave on the ground."
